By Par The Best Golf Food in Austin

By Weston Carls – March 4, 2022

A golf fan who walks 18 holes at the Austin Country Club during the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play would average five to six miles — about 16,000 steps. That will easily get us hungry, and therefore thinking, what are the best food options for spectators (or golfers) making the turn?

The WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play at Austin Country Club

Following your favorite top-64 golfer in the world around the sprawling hillside of Austin Country Club during The WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play will build up quite an appetite. The tournament, which is held from March 23 to 27, has loads of food in their food court that you can’t miss out on. Around the 9th and 10th holes is where you’ll find Austin’s food favorites, such as:

Located in East Austin on Manor Road at the Morris Williams Golf Course is Fairways Cantina, the sister restaurant to Colleen’s Kitchen. Fairways Cantina’s food is creative with splashes of color in everything they offer. I was impressed by the names of their food items such as the Happy Gilmore, the “grab-n-go” Turn Dog and the Trevino Verde house-made salsa. If you’re a golfer, you’ll know these names. Fairways Cantina hosts a family-friendly atmosphere with a gorgeous wrap-around patio, which makes this one of the top golf course restaurants in Austin.

Legends Grille and Bar at Onion Creek Club

Onion Creek Club is one of Austin’s historic, private golf clubs founded in 1975 by a three-time Masters Tournament champion Jimmy Demaret. Members and their guests enjoy 27 holes of golf designed by Demaret and Ben Crenshaw.

What I love about Onion Creek is that members and their families have the ability to play other sports such as tennis (four hard and two clay courts), pickleball, a junior Olympic-sized pool and a fitness center.

If swimming, playing tennis and golfing is possible all in one day, you’ll be a legend and deserve the casual, contemporary fare that’s locally sourced by Onion Creek’s executive chef. The menus change seasonally, with weekly and daily specials offered based on the availability of regional, fresh ingredients. Enjoy indoor dining with TVs on every wall or opt outside to overlook the rolling fairways surrounding Onion Creek.

Cisco’s at Lions Municipal Course

Bloody Mary with hot dog and fries.

Lions Municipal Course — or “Muny” — opened as the first public golf course in Austin in 1924, making its combination with Cisco’s, established in 1950 in East Austin, a perfect marriage to keep Austin local. Located at the turn, Cisco’s Muny Cafe is known for its migas, huevos rancheros, salsa ranchera and homemade biscuits. What I love about Cisco’s is that breakfast is served all day and they make their biscuits and bolillo roll all in-house. Try the Picadillo roll stuffed with ground beef, and let the big dog eat — add queso!

We’re throwing you a snap hook on this one as we know it’s not par for the course, but it offers an opportunity for every skill level to join the party. Topgolf Austin has three levels of hitting bays where golfers hit targets and the system automatically keeps score so you can focus on friends and the food.
