The Healing Lesson I Learned from a Houseplant

Just last week I bumped into my neighbor. We exchanged the usual quick chat. He asked if I was heading to work at my chiropractic clinic. I said, “Yup, off to the office.” He cracked his neck mid-convo and said, “Man, I love chiropractors.” I smiled, but then I told him, “What I do is… a little different.” Naturally, he asked, “How so?”
So I did what I always do. I used a plant to explain humans. Stick with me.

The Plant Test

“Okay,” I told him, “humor me for a second.” “If you had a sick plant with brown leaves and rotting soil, one you’d stuffed in a closet and now wanted to revive, what would you do?” He looked at me weird, then two seconds later said, “Give it sunlight?”

“Exactly! What else?”

“Water?”

“You got it.”

Simple. Obvious. No-brainer kind of care. Then I hit him with this: “If a human has fatigue, pain, and can’t sleep—what’s your solution?” He froze. He knew, but he also knew he wasn’t doing it. “I mean… get outside, exercise, eat better? But… I take a weed gummy to sleep and coffee to wake up. I know what I should do, but…”
And there it was. It’s easier to pop something than to pause. To stimulate or sedate instead of restore. The honesty was refreshing, though. Most people won’t admit it. But that moment opened the door for me to explain what I actually do.

What Changed Everything for Me

See, I used to do the crack-your-back kind of care. Six years of it. Someone hurts, I adjust them, they feel better for two days, then it’s back again next week. Then something clicked last year. We stopped chasing symptoms and started chasing the cause. Most symptoms? Pain. Low energy. Trouble sleeping? They all stem from the same thing: a nervous system that’s stuck in overdrive. Chronically lit up. Always “on.”

It’s like a wiring system overloaded with too much current—sparks start flying all over the place.

But here’s where we go wrong: we see those “sparks” as separate issues. Brown leaf syndrome. Root rot-itis. We start treating the leaves instead of looking at the soil and sunlight.

Lifespring Chriopractic Mission Statement

The Core 4 (And Why It’s Not Complicated)

In the office, we simplify that to what we call the Core 4: Sleep. Movement. Stress. Toxins. When those are out of whack, symptoms show up. When we get them back in sync, the healing starts.

That stiff neck? It might just be a 10,000-step-per-day problem, not a tight-muscle problem. Can’t fall asleep? Could be the stress from your nonstop schedule and your third cup of coffee by 2pm—not a melatonin deficiency. It’s easier to grab a CBD gummy, sure. It’s just not a real fix.

And yes, we still adjust people. But we do it in a way that supports the nervous system so the healing process moves faster—because it does take time. Not two visits. Not three cracks and you’re cured. Real change? That takes months. Because years of stress and imbalance don’t unravel in a week.

Your Body Knows What to Do

I get the appeal of the quick fix. I’ve used them too. But we’ve forgotten how to trust our bodies. How to create an environment where healing can actually happen. That’s what I gave my neighbor—a reminder.

The human body is wired to heal. Designed to restore. It just needs the right ingredients. Not magic. Not a mystery. Just nature doing its thing. I watched his face as the idea settled in. You could see it. That little lightbulb flicker. And honestly? People pay a lot of money searching for that flicker. Searching for truth.
I didn’t give him any treatment. I gave him permission to believe again.
