Living the Fit Life on 5th

By Leah – November 4, 2011

Some places to live seem to promote a more healthy lifestyle than others.  Here in Austin, those places tend to encourage folks to exercise, eat right, and take care of themselves.  Perhaps it’s proximity to the Roy and Ann Butler Hike and Bike Trail that gets you out the door; maybe it’s being able to pick up something good for you instead of fast food when you need a bite on the way home; it could be all those things and more that make where you live here in town a great place to find fitness.

Austin Fit Magazine is helping the business at Gables 5th Street Commons promote their event this Saturday, called Fit on 5th.  The various establishments at 1611 West 5th Street have banded together to showcase how fitness is an important part of the Gables 5th Street Commons lifestyle via a variety of demos, complimentary classes, reduced price services, tastings and meal deals, and other great stuff.  Here’s a sampling of what you can find from noon to 3:00 p.m. this Saturday, November 12:

Food

Beets Cafe serves “living foods” for those who are eating a raw diet or are just looking for something fresh and veggie-oriented.  They’ll have a food demo at noon, along with tastings and a raffle.

Sushi Zushi has an assortment of sushi, and they’re going to focus on presenting items from their low-calorie menu (this includes their Skinny Margarita for $5).

Subway is offering a special $5 meal deal on any 6-inch sub with 6 grams of fat (the meal includes the 6-inch sub, chips, and a 21-ounce drink).

Exercise

Empower Yoga wants to make yoga “accessible and beneficial to everyone” and they’re holding a free class at noon for all interested.  They’ll also have a raffle and some special membership pricing.

The Bar Method utilizes dance conditioning and isometrics, among other focuses, to strengthen and shape your body.  Stop by to see what a workout is like; there will be free classes offered for those who sign up in advance.

Health

Live Oak Pharmacy is a compounding pharmacy. That means they make your prescriptions specifically for you and look at your care in a very individualized way.  As we mentioned in an earlier blog post, Live Oak Pharmacy will have tastings, free blood pressure screening, product demos, and your yearly flu shot available for $25.

Beauty

Blo Blow Dry Bar will showcase a hair demo at noon and then offer special pricing on various salon services during the event, such as make-up touch-ups and regular blow outs.

Propoganda will be giving a 20% discount on cut and color.
