Inside
Austin
Tired of driving to the country for a good bike ride? On Jan.
9, join a ride entirely within Austin, following established
city bicycle routes. The ride will start in North Austin and
go through Hyde Park, UT, the Capital grounds, Congress Avenue,
Travis Heights, Barton Springs, Zilker Park, Deep Eddy and
Tarrytown, all at a leisurely pace. Bring a City of Austin
bicycle route map, available at many bike shops for $1. (A
limited number of maps will be available to Austin Cycling
Association members at the ride start.) There is a ride starting
at 9 a.m. and another ride at 1 p.m. Both start at Pillow
Elementary School, 3025 Crosscreek Drive. From Mopac/Loop
1 take the Steck exit. Go east one block to Shoal Creek. Take
a left (north) on Shoal Creek Blvd. and Crosscreek Drive is
the ONLY right turn on Shoal Creek Blvd. between Steck and
HWY 183. For more information, call Marc at 459.9183 for the
morning ride and Rick at 423.3562 for the afternoon ride.
Sun City Ride
On Jan. 22 at 9 a.m., hook up for a joint ride with the Sun
City Texas Cyclists. Traveling north on I-35, take exit 261A
and follow the access road to the traffic signal at Williams
Drive. Turn left (west) onto Williams Drive and go approximately
five miles to the Sun City entrance (a right turn at the traffic
signal). Next follow Del Webb Blvd. across the bridge, and
upon passing the entrance to Legacy Hills Grill and Clubhouse,
turn right onto Texas Drive. Drive about two blocks and turn
left into the Community Center parking lot. Park near the
Community Center (the second large building); the first building
is the Fitness Center. For more information, call Preston
at 345.1154 or Jim at 931.0945.
Old San Antonio Road
On Jan. 30 at 9 a.m., meet at Williams Elementary School at
Mario and Blue Valley Drive (one block east of South 1st Street
and six blocks south of William Cannon Drive) for a select-your-own-distance
ride of up to 55 miles. The relatively flat out-and-back route
goes through Buda, Kyle and the thickly wooded Blanco River
Valley to northern San Marcos. For more information, call
John at 502.2410.
