Special!
2005 Gym Guide
by Drex Earle, Ph.D.

As another new year rapidly approaches, health and fitness is undeniably on the minds of many an Austinite. And though various resolutions will be made (and broken) this upcoming year, perhaps the most popular among them is a dedication to becoming healthier and more fit. Naturally this sentiment represents different things to different people, but there is usually a common thread — finding a comfortable, inspiring and versatile environment to realize new fitness goals is a key factor.

Fortunately Austin is blessed with a wealth of top-notch facilities. However, if you’re a newbie to the area or simply looking for a change of scenery, sifting through the amenities can be a bit overwhelming.

So for 2005, we’ve compiled a comprehensive guide of 22 area gyms and recreation facilities, each with its own unique style and set of offerings, to help break through the confusion and distill the things that make each gym noteworthy.

All the information is neatly organized into a matrix-style format, showcasing membership information, equipment, classes, special amenities (tanning, massage, childcare, retail, etc.) and recreation options. (Note: If a particular gym has more than one facility, we review one of its locations, as denoted by an asterisk.)

Though many of the gyms included are full-fitness establishments with specialty packages at an additional cost, others cater to more specialized types of exercise, incorporating a more focused, no-frills approach.

Regardless of what you’re looking for, there’s something for everyone in this year’s gym guide — weightlifting, cardio, yoga, pilates, spinning, swimming, basketball, racquetball, rock climbing, massage and a much needed tan.

We sincerely hope you enjoy it, but most importantly that it helps you get a step closer to reaching your own fitness goals. Here’s to a new year and a healthier and fitter you!
