OK Weightlifting
by Drex Earle, Ph.D.

If you feel like you’ve hit a rut with your workouts or just want to try something new, OK Weightlifting might just be the change you need. Founded by Oleg Kechko, World Cup gold medalist and former No. 1-ranked Olympic weightlifter in the world, OK Weightlifting offers a fun, refreshing and unconventional alternative to regular strength training. Tracy Steinberg, co-owner and national-level weightlifter in her own right, explains the allure of OK’s approach.

“We provide a fun, straight-forward and no-nonsense environment for people to get in shape. All the exercises we do require different muscle groups, providing a whole-body workout. And, we’re here to help people of all levels reach their fitness goals by convincing them they can accomplish things they never thought they could.”

As a veritable newbie to weightlifting, I was admittedly a bit intimidated when I first walked in the door. Stepping into the austere-looking studio, I caught a glimpse of myself in the mirror surrounded by stacks of rainbow-colored plates – weights that looked deceptively harmless, like giant-sized lifesavers. Welcoming me from the other side of the room was Steinberg, smiling from ear to ear, preparing equipment for our workout. Needless to say, despite my pre-conceived notions or tinges of unfamiliarity, I was quickly put at ease by OK’s intoxicating atmosphere.

Starting with some basic “clean and jerk” movements using a light, wooden jousting stick, Steinberg watched each repetition carefully, critiquing my form and complimenting my technique. The song “Eye of the Tiger” blasted in the background as I felt myself starting to get the hang of it.

Next came “sweeping” the actual bar, a heavier and more awkward version of the wooden jousting stick. As I tried each new motion, I could feel the whole-body workout Steinberg was talking about. All of my major muscle groups were twitching with fatigue and I was amazed that I could condition my arms, shoulders, legs and back so effectively all at the same time.

After an intense 30 minute session, I felt invigorated and proud of what I’d accomplished. “This isn’t so bad,” I said to Steinberg, who quickly replied, “I know, but don’t be so surprised. I train a woman who first came in and couldn’t lift the 30-pound bar. Now she’s doing twice that weight!”

For anyone who’s ever wanted to give weightlifting a try or elevate their training to the next level, OK Weightlifting provides an energizing and affordable option.

“People from all different levels are welcome, says Steinberg. We’ve got people who are looking to lose 30 pounds and gain 30 pounds. We train professional weightlifters, have female-only conditioning and offer classes for kids as young as age 7. And if you want to come over on a Friday night, it’s packed, the music is pumping and everybody’s having a great time.”
