Q:How effective is
cavity-preventing chewing gum and how often should it be used?

A: Many of the newer chewing gums have an ingredient which helps to fight cavities. The new cavity-preventing chewing gums provide a great alternative to regular chewing gum. They are effective at reducing the occurrence of tooth decay when compared to regular chewing gum which contains sugars. Chewing cavity-preventing chewing gum or sugar-free gum is great when used in conjunction with good oral care (regular dental cleanings at least every six months, brushing twice daily and flossing once daily). In addition, drinking water and chewing these gums throughout the day is a great way to keep your mouth free of the sugars that cause tooth decay.”

Q: Do over-the-counter whitening products really work?

A:Over-the-counter products work, some a lot better than others, but they generally work best on individuals that have minor yellow staining of their teeth. These products also work best on younger people, like teenagers, because they don’t have years and years of staining like adults. The most important aspects of any form of whitening are the concentration of the whitening gel and the time the teeth are exposed to the gel. Custom home trays and in-office laser whitening are great ways to whiten teeth, too. Any whitening gel provided by the dentist is stronger in concentration when compared to over-the-counter products.

Q: Do you think ultrasonic
toothbrushes are more effective than the average toothbrush?

A:In general, we see healthier looking teeth and gums in individuals who use ultrasonic toothbrushes (like Sonicare, for example). If you ask dentists and dental hygienists which toothbrush they use and recommend to their patients, most will recommend a Sonicare ultrasonic toothbrush. Brushing with ultrasonic toothbrushes is best when used in conjunction with good oral care.
