Skin Deep
Hair Today, Gone Tomorrow
by Amy Baue

As the cold days of winter dwindle down, and the change of season gives way to warmer temperatures, it’s time to start thinking about getting our bodies ready for shorts and swimsuits. And that winter coat of unwanted hair has no place in the season’s fashions. Check out a few options to go from hair to bare.

Waxing
Waxing is probably the most popular form of hair removal and the least expensive. Angel Face European Skin Care offers a nonvegetable wax that dries hard on the skin and peels off easily, without having to use a cloth strip like most salons. This all-natural wax is less painful and keeps the hair off for about three to six weeks. You can expect the treated skin to be red for about 10 to 30 minutes after waxing. The cost varies depending on the area being treated. A brow wax, for example, is $12 and a bikini wax is $25.

Laser removal
This option is known as non-coherent light energy, delivering wavelengths toward the skin in order to remove the hair. Dr. Mike Escobedo of LazrSmooth Studios of Westlake Hills performs this procedure with the Millennium Epilight hair removal system. This option not only removes unwanted hair, but also helps eliminate abnormal pigmentation to the treated area.
According to Escobedo, “a patient can expect a reduction in pore size, improved skin texture and overall baby-soft sensual skin.” The cost depends on how large the treatable area is, but patients can expect to pay about $700 for 12 months of therapy, or about six to eight sessions.
For optimum results, patients should not tan for two weeks prior to and after each session. Also, taking certain medications or antibiotics can result in temporarily burned skin.

Sugaring
This old but modernized technique of hair removal dates back centuries when Egyptian women wanted to be beautiful and hairless. The sugaring paste is made of 100 percent natural ingredients and is massaged into the skin by hand at body temperature. The sugar paste seeps down into the follicle, adheres to the hair, then is removed gently in the natural direction of hair growth, causing less breakage and fewer ingrown hairs.
The sugaring treatment can be administered to hair as short as 1/16 of an inch, approximately two to three days after shaving. This eliminates the need to wait for unsightly hair growth. The treatment is offered by trained certified sugar practitioners at Excellence In Touch. The cost of sugaring varies from client to client, but typically runs 10 to 15 percent more than waxing. This is because it provides longer-lasting results, typically an extra week or two.
