Exercise, Its Benefits, and Heart Disease
We all know exercise is a wonderful thing. It helps relieve stress, keeps us strong and flexible, not to mention sharper and more focused. Add to that the energizing endorphins released whenever we work out, and you’ve got a healthy recipe that’s practically a no-brainer.
But as we all know, the benefits of exercise don’t end there. Exercise is also a major deterrent against chronic disease, like diabetes, stroke, osteoporosis, and cancer. And when it comes to cardiovascular disease, it’s no surprise that frequent stops to the gym can strengthen our heart muscles over time, have a cleansing effect on our arteries (by improving the elasticity of our blood vessels), and release chemicals into the bloodstream to keep plaque from building up.
Nitric Oxide Keeps Us Sharp
One chemical recently recognized for its cardiovascular-boosting properties is nitric oxide (NO). NO is actually a derivative of nitroglycerin — that neat little substance that gives dynamite its explosive personality. Each time we work out, nitric oxide is produced by the inner lining of our blood vessels (endothelium) and distributed to an underlying layer of muscle cells, signaling them to stop contracting. This gradual relaxation, known as vasodilation, opens the arteries up and allows greater amounts of blood to flow through. This can help circulate more oxygen to peripheral organs, muscles, and the brain, keeping us feeling fresher and helping us perform at a higher level more often — just one of the reasons why we feel better after a good sweat!
But what if we’re not able to work out regularly? How can we get the same nitric oxide benefit if we choose to take a couple days off from the gym? A new product called Niteworks may offer a promising alternative.
Niteworks
Niteworks is a formula developed by one of the great pioneers in cardiovascular disease research, world-renowned Nobel Laureate Dr. Louis Ignarro. Ignarro spent much of his career investigating the mechanisms by which nitric oxide is produced in the body, its effects on the circulatory system, as well as other holistic benefits like increased longevity, enhanced immune function, and disease-prevention.
The way Niteworks works is by simulating the nitric oxide effect of exercise, but in a supplemental form. The major ingredient is a naturally occurring amino acid called argenine, which serves as the precursor to nitric oxide in the body. Also included in the Niteworks formula is another amino acid called citrulline, folic acid, and vitamins E and C. Each ingredient is natural, safe, physiologically essential, and medically endorsed.
Niteworks comes in a delicious lemon powder that can be dissolved in water and taken easily. It is recommended that Niteworks be consumed before going to bed, so that it can act when natural nitric oxide levels are at their lowest (during sleep).
THE ROLE OF Niteworks
In addition to claims about renewed vigor and a refreshed sense of well-being, the manufacturer of Niteworks - Herbalife - also alleges the following benefits of supplemental nitric oxide:
Heart: Surrogates reduced capacity of the endothelium to produce endogenous NO in the body.
Lungs: A proven therapeutic effect of NO in intensive care patients and reductions in dangerously high blood pressure in infants.
Impotence: Facilitation of erections by dilating blood vessels in the penis.
Cancer: Induction of programmed cell death, a process referred to as apoptosis (potentially a powerful cancer treatment for patients with tumor growth).
