Class course guide

The University of Texas offers informal classes to the public for an opportunity, including many that provide new ways to achieve your fitness goals. We’ve highlighted just a few classes below that could be a welcomed addition to your current fitness regimen. For more exciting classes, pick up an informal class course catalog or visit www.informalclasses.org.

CAPOEIRA
Capoeira is an exciting, total-body workout that will improve your strength, flexibility, cardiovascular endurance and coordination. Known for its constant, evasive movements and graceful circular attacks, Capoeira is an Afro-Brazilian martial art developed by slaves some 400 years ago. In order to disguise its martial intent, the slaves added music, acrobatic flourishes, pantomimed gestures and aspects of dance to the art. The result is a rich cultural expression that is great for fun, fitness or self-defense. The class meets off campus in north central Austin. Dates for this class are from Feb. 2 to Feb. 25, meeting Mondays and Wednesdays from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. The cost is $56 for the general public and $48 for U.T. students.

POWER TRAINING
Combining the best of kickboxing, boot camp and basic training, this workout takes you to your highest level! This is a special, challenging and intense workout where you will throw more than 500 kicks, perform countless sit-ups, throw 1,000 punches and do 150 squats — in every class! Power Training will tighten, tone and lean out your entire body. Classes are high-intensity/interval format, so your body burns fat both during and for an hour after each workout. Choose from either Monday and Wednesday classes from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m., held Feb. 2 through March 3, or March 30 to April 29; or Tuesday and Thursday classes from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., held Feb. 3 to March 4, or March 30 to April 29. The cost is $68 for the general public and $58 for U.T. students.

BALLROOM DANCE FOR BEGINNERS
Expand your fun, fitness and social repertoire by learning how to ballroom dance. Get in the swing as you learn some of the oldest and newest dance steps including the fox trot, waltz and quickstep. Class material is presented in a simple and straightforward manner so that everyone can learn. Tips on leading and following are also offered. Classes will be held: on Sundays, Feb. 1 to Feb. 29, from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m.; Mondays, Feb. 2 to March 1, from 8 p.m. to 9 p.m.; Wednesdays, March 3 to April 7 from 7:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.; and Tuesdays, March 30 to April 27 from 8 p.m. to 9 p.m. The cost is $56 for the public and $48 for U.T. students.
