Ask A Professional

Q: Why do my knees Often hurt after running?
A: A lot of factors can contribute to knee pain, such as past injuries, repetitive motions, osteoarthritis, running surfaces, shoes, and so forth. Typically, “runner’s knee,”chondromalacia patella or patella femoral syndrome, is knee pain caused from irritation or inflammation of the iliotibial band (ITB). This thick band of fascia is located on the lateral thigh. It often causes pain about three inches above or at the lateral kneecap. The ITB is inherently tight and thus pulls the knee cap laterally causing a “tracking” problem and subsequently, irritation and pain. Treatments for this condition include: proprioceptive neuro-facilitated stretching of the ITB, and strengthening the medial quads via rehab and specifically targeted exercises. Other treatments include icing, resting, transverse friction massage of the patella, deep-tissue massage, ultrasound, cold laser therapy and adjustment of the fibular head.

Q: What is Body Composition and why is it an important assessment tool?
A: Body composition is one measure of a person’s overall physical fitness. It measures lean body mass and body fat. Only body composition can measure how much muscle and fat are gained or lost in a fitness and/or nutritional program. Not only will too much body fat lead to health problems, but increasing your lean mass also helps burn calories more efficiently and increases metabolic rate.

Q: How Important is a nutritional recovery product after exercise?
A: It is very important immediately after exercise to supply your body with a carbohydrate/protein recovery drink. This is the time your body is best able to use these nutrients for fat burning and muscle firming. Your body’s muscles need a combination of protein and carbs to create the right hormonal climate for fat burning and muscle building.
