Coconut Curiosity
With an exotic yet accessible flavor and plenty of uses, coconuts provide a shortcut to a culinary and nutritional vacation.
NUTRITION
This tropical delight is sometimes looked down upon for being high in fat (90% of the fat found in coconut is saturated), but correspondingly robust levels of zinc, iron and phosphorous and a lower sugar content than most other fruits casts the coconut in a pretty positive light. Coconut meat also has about three grams of protein and nine grams of fiber per serving, so this indulgence’s health benefits are legit.
OIL
The essence of the coconut, referred to as oil or coconut butter, is made up of a whopping 90 percent saturated fat. This doesn’t prevent it from being a popular cooking aid, however, and it has even been shown to have medicinal properties. Many people use it for antiviral, antifungal and antibacterial purposes and it is often added as an ingredient in cosmetics and skin products.
WATER VS. MILK
Yes they’re different; coconut water is a clear liquid found naturally inside of young coconuts. It is fat free and high in potassium and other minerals, thus it is sometimes marketed as a sports drink as well as a refreshing tropical beverage. Coconut milk is sweeter and thicker in consistency and is prepared by grating coconut meat and possibly mixing it with warm water.
