Let Food By Thy Medicine

By AFM Team – February 1, 2016

It’s that time of year again; Cold and flu season is upon us in full force. The sniffling, sneezing and coughing interrupts our lives, and it’s not long before we are desperately ingesting whatever remedy we can get our hands on in order to recover quickly. If you prefer the natural approach, turn to food to heal what ails you.

Coconut Oil

Coconut oil is high in lauric acid and is thought to dissolve the lipid coating around some viruses and make them more susceptible to attack by the immune system. If sick, aim for 5-6 tablespoons per day in food or melted and stirred into hot tea. Coconut oil has many other health benefits as well and is known to boost the immune system. Opt for a tablespoon of coconut oil even when you’re not sick.

Apple Cider Vinegar for Strep/Sore Throat

It tastes awful, but if you are sick enough, you won’t taste it anyway. Drink a tablespoon in water (gargle first) at the first sign of illness and repeat hourly until symptoms disappear. This alkalizes the body and helps kill viruses and bacteria. Usually one to three teaspoons per eight ounces of water is the appropriate amount.

Garlic & Onions for Cold, Flu and Fever-like Symptoms

For extreme cases of illness, start by rubbing olive oil on each foot. Then, slice onion (white or red) and garlic and place all over the bottom of the feet. Wrap the foot in saran wrap and place a sock on overnight.

Onions and garlic have been shown to pull toxins and help the body heal.

Cinnamon and Honey

Good for more than just stabilizing blood sugar, cinnamon is an effective antiviral and antibiotic. When sick, mix one tablespoon with one teaspoon of honey and stir to make a spicy and very effective tea that helps relieve cough and congestion and lower fever.

Raw Honey

Not only is honey anti-bacterial, but it is antiviral and anti-fungal. These properties alone make it more powerful than conventional antibiotics. Honey can target undetected fungal conditions that may be at the root cause of perpetual illness.

Catnip

It sounds bizarre, but this herb isn’t just a drug for cats. It’s a traditional cold and flu remedy and great for children. It helps induce sleep and settles the stomach. As a tincture or tea, it is a great herb for combating flu, cold or other illness.
