AFM's fitness writer walked the aisles of Austin's annual fitness expo and found some attention-grabbing new gear.

Several things intrigued me about this booth and product. First of all, I was able to meet the founder of the company, Mark Jenson, and hear his story first hand. He took valuable time to talk about his days as a Nike guy and his passion for running and triathlons. Like many of us, he was looking for a sustainable form of energy fuel that didn’t include all of the artificial crap—my technical word for it—we’ve all grown used to. You know, the stuff that actually ends up upsetting our stomachs and slowing us down on long training runs and race days.
Here is Mark Jenson’s story in case you’re curious. He is the everyman athlete obsessed with the best possible equipment and fuel that produces the best possible performance. He and the CEO, Mick McCormick, explained their product simply to my non-scientific brain: Since glucose is the only fuel that drives our body—as it is immediately and easily digestible—that is the type of energy product they set out to create. It makes since, seeing as how when you get an IV, it has water, glucose and electrolytes in it.
Our culture is obsessed with going “sugar free,” and that’s great as it pertains to artificial sugars, high fructose corn syrup, and the like. However, as an endurance athlete, your body needs fuel. And that fuel is glucose.
Some of the features Glukos has:
- No Artificial Sweeteners
