Austin Subaru’s Paddle for Puppies

By AFM – July 16, 2012

What’s better than spending a summer morning on the beautiful waters of Town Lake you may ask? How about doing it for a great cause! And in this case, a very cute one. Paddle for Puppies is a fundraising event benefiting Austin Pets Alive! Parvo Puppy Program. Participants can use a Town Lake approved watercraft (whether it be SUP board, kayak, canoe, water bike, etc.) to make their way down the lake, and if your dog is a fan of the water they are more than welcome to join you! All participants MUST have a personal floatation device (life jacket) with their watercraft and dogs are encouraged to wear life jackets as well (if they are going to be on a watercraft for this event). Rentals are available, so worry not if you don’t have your own “boat.” The Rowing Dock offers reservations for day-long rentals as well as a few other local establishments located on the lake. Registration for this event is limited to 100 registrants, so hurry up and claim your spot! Prices increase July 31st so sign up now to get a bargain price. More information can be found at the event website, paddleforpuppies.com. Also check below for more information on the day’s schedule and APA’s Puppy Parvo Program, hope to see everyone there!

APA!’s Parvo Program: Signs of parvovirus infection once meant immediate and absolute euthanasia for puppies and dogs at the city shelter. The city now calls in Austin Pets Alive and gives a same day deadline to pick up the puppies and start treatment. The disease takes about a week to treat and once they are free of parvo, these amazing pups go on to lead normal, healthy lives and are highly adoptable! Watching these puppies go from being on death’s door to playing and eating again is what keeps our volunteers coming back to help treat them. Each parvo puppy costs APA! about $250 to treat, so the number of lives APA! can save is directly related to donated supplies and funds that come through.

APA!’s parvo program has over an 88% save rate – impressive considering most puppies arrive well after the recommended start time for treatment.
